how it works
The Clayblock team will help you and/or your architect or builder to estimate the blocks and quantities you will need for your project. We will need you to send us your drawings. Alternatively, your architect or QS are easily able to estimate quantities required.
Depending on your site conditions and personal preference for thermal retention, the standard T8 365 block will meet the current Irish building standard without additional insulation. If you want a warmer or passive home, apartment or office you can use any of the higher R-value blocks. You may also need the lintel & rebate blocks. Quantity estimates can be calculated for you from your finished architectural drawings.
No. Clay blocks can be installed by any compentant blocklayer or builder and training is offered to those who wish to use these systems.
The blocks arrive with the required bags of mortar for your project and are applied using a specifically designed applicator at 1mm thickness. Alternatively, your builder can choose to use Dry-Fix – a special cartridge-applied mortar which is 50% faster and again, cleaner to use.
A lime based plaster system by Baumit is highly recommended being breathable, and waterproof.
The blocks are easily cut by a builder, plumber or electrician using a proprietary wall chasing tool similar to concrete masonary. They can also easily be cut with a De-walt Alligator saw to facilitate services. When the services have been fixed the chases may be filled and if necessary, Parge Coat (Airtight layer) can be applied.
Standard masonry fixings from light to heavy duty are available and suitable to use with clay block construction.
Due to the thermal matrix design of the clay block which is 365mm wide and kiln fired at temperatures of 1200c, water penetration is minimal. A lime plaster system which is breathable and waterproof is recommended as a finish. Alternative render systems can also be used.
To date, we are able to estimate that the material purchase price of the products is on a par with concrete blocks and its many components and approx 15-20% more expensive than timber frame materials. The construction of a timber wall or concrete block cavity construction requires multiple tasks to erect the structure, ties, insulation, internal and external bases and finishes whereas the monolithic wall is a single task which can simply be finished on the interior and exterior if you wish.
